Kalahari melon: the origin
Native to the Kalahari desert, in an area of around 900,000 km² that
extends across southern Africa, passing through Angola, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, the Kalahari Melon (Citrullus lanatus) is, in fact, a wild watermelon, present in the region for thousands of years. For centuries, the melon was a crucial source of water in the Kalahari and Sahara deserts. Its cultivation spread over 3 thousand years ago in Mediterranean Africa, the Middle East and Western Asia.
